In the early days of long-haul aviation up until the early 1970s, it was the navigator in the cockpit who showed the pilots the way across the oceans - the secret king on board. Harry Hofmann, born in 1918 in the Zurich Oberland, was one of the first flight navigators with the Swiss airline “Swissair”. A night flight in the DC-4 over the North Atlantic, the bold crossing of the Intertropical Front on the newly opened South America route, the dawn of the jet age... Harry Hofmann's life as a navigator spans a wide arc from the pioneering days to the final disappearance of a proud profession.
